Mahalo (thanks in Hawaiian) for asking this question.
First of all, the term religion is often misunderstood. Religion is the broad term given to the set of rules and regulations that are followed in who we believe in and to whom we worship. If it is required that you join a religion, that is in itself an indication that something is wrong. Nowhere in the Bible does it say to join a religion.
Second, the Bible says that we all need a Savior, Jesus. The Bible also tells us that we need fellowship with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and with fellow believers. Therefore, the question should be, how do I choose the best group of believers to have fellowship with?
The best group of believers to have fellowship with depends on a few factors:
1. The group should believe in Jesus and put Jesus before any programs or rules.
2. The group should believe that the Bible is God’s Word and be doers of God’s Word, as it says in James 1:22.
3. The group should be able to help you in your discipleship journey. You need to be able to learn and grow in your faith (build a closer relationship with Jesus).
4. The group should have opportunities for you to use your Spiritual gifts in ministry.
These four factors are the main things God wants for us in our walk with Him. The other things that are nice to have are A place where you feel loved and cared for, A place where you feel comfortable and safe, a place you trust to help you with your shortcomings, and A place where you can use your strengths to help others.
When the Lord leads you to the right place to fellowship, then commit yourself. Church hopping is only good when looking for a home church. Once found, work through any differences you may have.
Remember, if you don’t understand, ask!
