Thank you for asking this controversial and complex question. I devoted a few chapters to this topic in my new book, Wonderfully and Uniquely Made. I will give a brief summary here, so please, if you don’t understand, ask!
First of all, God is so far beyond us humans that we cannot and never will be able to understand who God is. The example with Moses in Exodus 33:18-20;
Then Moses said, “Now show me your glory.” 19And the Lord said, “I will cause all my goodness to pass in front of you, and I will proclaim my name, the Lord, in your presence. I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. 20But,” he said, “you cannot see my face, for no one may see me and live.”
The awesomeness of God is only revealed to us, if needed, at the discretion of the Holy Spirit.
1 Corinthians 2:10 says these are the things God has revealed to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God.
Understanding the concept of the image of God is of paramount importance. It's a logical necessity to comprehend that if man was made in God's image, we must grasp what that image is. The image of God is different than the Divine being of God. Therefore, we can know and understand the image of God without a meltdown. Some aspects of the image of God, such as the Trinity, can only be comprehended through faith. The Bible hints at these truths, but it doesn't use our everyday language to describe them. The Bible is clear that there are three persons of God. The Bible is also very clear that there is only one God. We humans have a hard time understanding how three can be one. We understand that three parts can be one, but how can three complete wholes be one? Nevertheless, this is the image the Holy Spirit chose to reveal to us.
Remember, if you don’t understand, ask!
