Aloha, I’m Dr. Gene,
I grew up in a household of brilliant people, and then there was me, the moron and now the only one with a Ph.D. When God called me to teach, I asked God how I could possibly teach if I could not learn myself. God said the Holy Spirit would teach me, and WOW! It wasn’t that I could not learn; it was because I learned differently from everyone else. Now, I want to share my knowledge with all of you. With every Christian and anyone else who will listen.
I call this website “Glean From Dr. Gene.” Initially, the word glean or gleaning meant gathering leftovers after a field was harvested. Now, according to Merriam-Webster, to glean means to learn slowly, patiently, and perhaps indirectly. Google Dictionary also defines glean as extracting (information) from various sources.
ADHD
I was recently diagnosed with ADHD and was told I probably had it all my life. ADHD, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, is where your mind is racing from one thing to another, and your body tries to keep up. It is not that you cannot pay attention; it is that you pay attention to too many things at once. When you try to slow down and pay attention to one or two things, your body moves around to compensate for the lag time. When I need to sit in one place to listen to someone speak or watch TV, some part of me has to be moving. Now that I am older, I can picture a part of me moving in my mind, and it works just as well.
A person with ADHD is often accused of spacing out during a conversation. We are not trying to be impolite; we just have difficulty slowing our minds down. My wife has learned that she needs to get my attention occasionally when she notices that I look spaced out. My youngest daughter also has ADHD and was not diagnosed until she was an adult. We found that trying to suppress her only made things worse. We let her move around within boundaries. Although she was over and under her desk and on and off her chair, she got her schoolwork done. If we made her sit still, she would rebel big time because she wasn’t capable of sitting still with ADHD.
A good problem with people with ADHD is that we can go into a focused zone and accomplish a significant amount of work in a short time. Getting a lot of work done is always good, but it is a problem when it is not the appropriate time. We could get lost in a project for hours without realizing that time has gone by.
Another not-so-good problem for people with ADHD is we have difficulty in recalling information from our memories. Because our minds are racing (thinking about more than one thing at a time), we process a lot of information at the same time and save all the information we are thinking about in a big lump. The information we are looking for is surrounded by a lot of other things than just the particular information we need. Therefore, we need a few more hints to jog our memories. This is why I do not usually answer questions in real time because the information required to answer the question needs to be jogged a little first before I can find it in my memories.
Questions and Answers
I will be answering questions about subjects you need an answer to. I do not claim to know everything, but I have found over the years that the Holy Spirit helps me find an answer when I need one. I have learned to trust Luke 11:11-13, which says, “Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? 12Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”
When I come upon a question that I do not get an answer to, I check the reason for asking the question. James 4:2-3, You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet, but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. 3When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures. If I am asking with good motives, then I look more closely at the question itself. Am I asking the right question? We often ask questions one way, but we really need to know something else. There are so many different ways we ask wrong questions. God can see right through these types of questions. One example is that we often ask God Why did you not heal me? When we should of asked God What do You need me to do? God’s Word says if we ask in faith, believing, we will be healed in the name of Jesus. Matthew 21:22, If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.” So we are healed. We just need to have patience while the healing takes place. There are so many variables that make us think we have not received an answer to our prayers. Everyone’s situation is different, so you will need to ask a specific question about your unique situation.
If you have a question you can share with everyone, please give me permission to share it. Although we are all unique, we share many commonalities. So, by sharing, you are helping others who are too shy to ask. I also have posted my confidential email if you have a question you wish to keep private. That is DrGene@thebehls.net.
Educator
God has called me to teach, but not in a classroom. God wants me to help every unique individual understand the unique way they understand. Most people share information in their own way, which means we have to interpret what they say to understand it. To interpret, we need some previous knowledge on which to build on. A teacher's job is to guide you through this process. A teacher should be able to help you find the basic information needed to build up your knowledge until you can understand the information you were presented.
Another important job of a teacher is to confirm the new knowledge you receive is correct in the way it was intended. An example would be if you saw light blue and someone else saw dark blue, the teacher would be able to verify that the important thing is that it was blue. Remember, we all perceive the same things differently, so stop battling over minor differences.
You probably noticed that the above information made you want to ask many more questions than what you have learned so far. There are two reasons: First, everyone understands differently, so the information is only a starting point for you. You need to ask questions to interpret. Second, you need to ask questions because some people who need to won't.
