Mahalo (thanks in Hawaiian) for asking this question. The short answer is yes, but it is very, very difficult to do. Romans 10:9-10 clearly states the requirements to be saved and why these requirements indicate we are saved. “If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.” We also know that most New Testament verbs imply an ongoing action. With this in mind, these verses would be more like this: “If you keep on declaring with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and keep on believing in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be continually saved. 10For it is with your heart that you continually believe and are continually justified, and it is with your mouth that you continually profess your faith and are continually saved.”
We sinful parents do not kick our children out of the house when they rebel. We help our children learn to get along in the family. God our Father will help His children much more than we ever could. However, if our adult children choose to leave the family, even after all our pleading, we cannot stop them. We would gladly welcome them back if they later change their minds. God gave us free will to choose. If we decide to leave God’s family, God will let us go, but will always gently let us know we are welcome back.
The Holy Spirit does everything possible (short of violating free will) to bring us to salvation. The Holy Spirit does everything possible (short of violating free will) to keep us saved. The Holy Spirit does everything possible (short of violating free will) to bring us back to salvation if we choose to leave. You cannot accidentally lose your salvation. The devil, no man, or even ourselves, can trick us into losing our salvation. We have to look directly into the eyes of Jesus and tell Him we no longer want to be saved, and we no longer want to go to heaven. To lose our salvation, we would need to confess with our mouths that Jesus is no longer our Lord and believe with our hearts that we would be better off without Jesus. The possibility of someone doing this is slim to none. That is why some say once saved, always saved. God will not let you go without a gentle battle.
