How do you choose the right version of the Bible to read?
How do you choose the right version of the Bible to read?
God will ensure that translations of the Bible remain true. Matthew 5:18 says, “For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.” This does not mean all paraphrasing and personal quotes will always be 100% true. Paraphrasing and personal quotes are the individual's way of understanding. We are all uniquely made, so we understand things differently.
When choosing a version, make sure it is a translation and not a Paraphrase or personal quote. Choose a translation that uses words you understand. The King James version is a seven-tier translation (Translated from a translation six times). Nehemiah 1:5 (KJV), And said, I beseech thee, O Lord God of heaven, the great and terrible God, that keepeth covenant and mercy for them that love him and observe his commandments: Psalm 66:3 (KJV), Say unto God, How terrible art thou in thy works! Through the greatness of thy power shall thine enemies submit themselves unto thee. Psalm 66:5 (KJV), Come and see the works of God: he is terrible in his doing toward the children of men. The word “terrible” has changed meaning since King James’ time. Back then, it meant great and awesome. Now it means you did something wrong.
Choose a version you can understand with the words you are familiar with. Most of the latest English versions are direct translations from the original languages. This means you should pray and ask the Holy Spirit to guide you as you read different versions of translations. God's Word is truth, and your understanding should reflect that.
